On the Clock: Arizona Cardinals
For the next few weeks leading up to the draft, I am going to assume to roll of each NFL general manager and make draft picks based upon need, scheme, and in some cases wants. I will not make any trades throughout this process but will chime in when I think one is needed. Each day leading up to the draft I will make a pick and summarize my thought process of why certain teams will go a particular way. So put this blog in your favorites section and check back daily to see who I will select for each team. With the fifth pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinals select…
Robert Quinn, DE/OLB, UNC (6'4" 265 lbs)
Many "experts" think that we need to draft a QB and that it is the "obvious" pick. Sorry, gents but that is not the case. Don't get me wrong, we need a QB, but we are in a weak division that is ready to be won now. All we need is a veteran QB and there are plenty. Cam Newton is a very intriguing player but he is not right for the our system and with my coach on the hot seat, I doubt he would want to put his job on the line with a rookie QB. If we have another poor season I might have to fire him. I need to give him some better ingredients. Other than QB, our most glaring hole is with our pass rush. Robert Quinn has a high motor and rarely gives up on a play. Excellent upper body strength and amazing athleticism will allow him to play the rush outside LB position for our 3-4 defense. I considered J.J. Watt at this spot since is is so hard to find a 5 technique DE but I have enough depth there to allow me to pass on him.
"Sinbad" brings it on every play. He would have had a dominant year if he wasn't suspended for minor NCAA violations. I considered DaQuan Bowers at this spot, but rumors of his knee having long term issues really scares me. I'd much rather have a guy who has less wear and tear. I don't think I am overstating anything when I say I think Robert Quinn could be the next DeMarcus Ware.
Something I am considering is trading for Kevin Kolb. There is no way I am giving up a top 5 pick for him but I would be willing to part with my second round pick this year and our first round pick next year. My thought process is that I fix the QB situation for the long term and my first round pick should be in the late teens or possibly in the 20's. Reason being is that with an upgraded QB, better pass rush and weak division I should be able to win 9 games with this guy and build from that. I keep Larry Fitzgerald happy which keeps our fans happy.
