On the Clock: Cincinnatti Bengals

For the next few weeks leading up to the draft, I am going to assume to roll of each NFL general manager and make draft picks based upon need, scheme, and in some cases wants.  I will not make any trades throughout this process but will chime in when I think one is needed.  Each day leading up to the draft I will make a pick and summarize my thought process of why certain teams will go a particular way.  So put this blog in your favorites section and check back daily to see who I will select for each team.  With the fourth pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select…

Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri (6’5” 234 LBS)

"Hot Sauce"

My current QB situation is not ideal. I have a disgruntled “franchise” QB (Carson Palmer) and no solid long term back up.  There are a few players  out on the market that I could get do fill in for a few seasons (McNabb, Young, Hasselbeck, Bulger), but word is spreading around the league that the Cincinnati organization is in disarray and now it is coming from a very well respected veteran in Palmer. So now the chances of our organization attracting one of these guys with value are evaporating.  Chad Ochocinco is being himself and I can deal with it another year. I am developing WRs behind him with Andre Caldwell and Jerome Simpson. My offensive line is very much offensive in quality to the fans but there isn’t a prospective lineman worth a top 5 pick.  My defense has shown improvement. They are young and aggressive. I would like to address my defensive backs with a draft pick or two but I can hold off on that.

“Hot Sauce” is a large quarterback with a cannon arm and underrated mobility.  I don’t see him as a franchise changing quarterback, but with time can develop into a reliable quarterback. His numbers at Missouri are not impressive. Only 16 TDs in a spread offensive is hard to overlook.  There is definitely a red flag there when Chase Daniel (the previous QB at Missouri who did not get drafted in 2009) averaged 33:13 TD to INT ratio in his 3 years as a starter and Blaine Gabbert averaged a 20:9 TD to INT ratio.  I think that as GM of the Bengals I can develop him even further.  Marvin Lewis has developed highly touted QBs before and will be smart about it.  We will need to run a lot and focus on our defense. Carlos Dunlap is coming into his own and our linebackers are dominant against the run.

I will need to be careful with our 35th overall pick.  There are going to be a lot of good players with value at this pick, but we need to be smart. I might be able to trade back a few spots with a team looking to move up to get a QB that falls. If I can move back 10 spots and pick up a fourth round pick, I will have to do it.  There is plenty of value deep into the second round so I’ll probably go with an offensive lineman that falls to whenever my second round pick ends up. There could be a lot of appealing running backs available at this spot too but I know that one of them will fall to the third round.

Carson has all the leverage.  He has money in the bank and can easily retire. I am not going to lose a QB of Palmer’s value to retirement. I’d rather trade him for a 3rd or 4th round pick than get nothing.  He is as good as gone but I really can’t do anything until after the CBA is complete.  He’ll get his wish but I will do my best to send him to the NFC so that we never have to face him. Or I can be a real jerk and send him to Oakland. Careful for what you wish for Carson.

On the Clock: Buffalo Bills

For the next few weeks leading up to the draft, I am going to assume to roll of each NFL general manager and make draft picks based upon need, scheme, and in some cases wants.  I will not make any trades throughout this process but will chime in when I think one is needed.  Each day leading up to the draft I will make a pick and summarize my thought process of why certain teams will go a particular way.  So put this blog in your favorites section and check back daily to see who I will select for each team.  With the third pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills select…

Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU (6’0” 219 LBS)

"Silk"
Last year the Buffalo Bills said that they were going to take the best player available when they picked and one could argue that they did. C.J. Spiller was the 9th overall pick for the Bills and was considered by many to be a game breaker.  Now it is tough to grade Spiller after one season but the Bills can’t be happy with what came of his rookie year.  The organization has come out again and said that the 1st round pick for the Bills will be the best available player.  If I stick with that idea, Patrick Peterson is easily the best player available and might be the best player in the draft.

While running the Bills I have to consider the fact that I have a 28 year old QB behind center and that he is coming of his best season yet.  My coach Chan Gailey is a wizard at getting the most out of quarterbacks and there isn’t a franchise changing QB in this draft like previous draft.  Matt Ryan, Matt Stafford, and Sam Bradford helped other clubs start down the path to success but I don’t believe that Blaine Gabbert or Cam Newton can change the path for my franchise.  My offense is growing.  I need to fill some holes up on the O-line and strengthen my defense.  The no doubt about it prospect on the board is Patrick Peterson.

"Silk" has the ability to be a hybrid defensive back that can play on the outside against the top WR, slide into the nickel on short yardage pass situations, or place into the safety spot and blitz.  He is a dangerous punt returner as well and could change the game if I need a spark.  I keep putting things in the media that suggest that I love Cam Newton but I am trying to get a team to bite to try and trade up to the number 3 spot.  You never know.  It takes just one team to overpay for a draft pick.

In the second round I will consider drafting a QB that falls.  Christian Ponder, Andy Dalton and Ryan Mallet all come to mind.  I think Ponder could be excellent in my system and might consider trading back into the end of the first round if he falls.  I’m also going to consider taking a top flight guard to help out in the run game. I will sign a veteran to help out along the line as well.   Stacy Andrews is probably going to get cut due to his salary. However, he is still a fine fill in for a year

On the Clock: Denver Broncos

For the next few weeks leading up to the draft, I am going to assume to roll of each NFL general manager and make draft picks based upon need, scheme, and in some cases wants.  I will not make any trades throughout this process but will chime in when I think one is needed.  Each day leading up to the draft I will make a pick and summarize my thought process of why certain teams will go a particular way.  So put this blog in your favorites section and check back daily to see who I will select for each team.  With the second pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select…

Von Miller, DE/OLB, Texas A&M (6’3” 246 lbs)

As GM of the Denver Broncos I need to sit back and think about what issues last year, lead our team down the toilet.  Sure I could cop out and say it was a poor coach and bad scheme.  But that isn’t enough.  My offense is growing.  I have a solid running back but need depth.  My QB situation is enviable since Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow are solid options. My WRs have depth but are injury prone. I’d like to get some depth their late on as well. I’d really like to upgrade along my offensive line but there is no one worth taking at the #2 overall pick. Defense is my issue. Elvis Dumervil will be coming back with his 10.5 sack average per year so my pass rush should improve.  Brian Dawkins is getting old and Champ Bailey will be here for another 4 years. I’m switching to a 4-3 so I need to add a player that can help out with the 4-3.  Ideally I’d like to get a DT that I can plug in the middle but I Von Miller is the best player on the board.  His film shows that he can drop back in coverage as a LB or put his hand on the ground.  My defensive minded coach would probably love a guy with his athleticism. He could move him all around the field and hopefully with the addition of him and Elvis to my defense we should be able to increase our pathetic sack total from 2010.

"The Executioner" may have trouble living up to the hype that everyone places onto him, but being on a team with another stud DE will allow him to get a lot of one-on-ones.  He'll be able to dominate against the average tackles in the league since he is so athletic and he'll be too quick for RBs that stay in to block.  He can cover in zone, but I don't know how I feel about him in man coverage on a TE.  Miller played in a 4-3 defense his sophomore year, and then as a joker in 2009 when he had 17 sacks.  If he can stay healthy, the Broncos can look to him to not only be a dominant pass rusher, but a great team leader.
"The Executioner"
There is depth at the DT position and the CB position.  I need severe help at both but since I have 2 second round picks I can wait for the best player at either one of those positions.  Stephen Paea and Drake Nevis are 2 defensive tackles that will probably fall to the second round.  I am also interested in Ras-I Dowling and Brandon Harris as cornerbacks that I could plug in as a starter or even as a nickel back.  This passing league forces me to have depth at this position.

Some of my fans will be wondering, “Why would the Broncos want to do this? Defense at the first 3 picks?” Well as GM, I need to think about where my team is coming from, why we were there in the first place and where I want the team to go.  Denver is moving to a 4-3 defense which means a major overhaul will be needed with the personnel.  I probably won’t be able to do it through free agency because of the lockout. I can’t roll the dice and hope that I can get a DT or DE via free agency because if I miss out in free agency, I won’t have any other options other than trading and I would not have leverage at that point. The chances that any veterans come to Denver at market price are very low since my team is rebuilding. Also, I truly think that our team has a chance to challenge for the division this season. The AFC West is weak and with good coaching at solid drafting I could build a defense that can give our team a chance to win some games.  Kansas City had the best record last year, but it was mainly due to coaching.  We have improved that with John Fox now in town.  The Raiders will fall apart because they don’t have a true answer at quarterback and are going to lose their best defensive player. Not having a first round pick will also hurt them. The Chargers are always a team to reckon with but I know that Ron Rivera is gone so the defense is probably going to take a step back. Vincent Jackson is probably going to be a free agent and I’d love to sign him away from them. With him, Demaryious Thomas, Brandon Lloyd, and Eddie Royal I think our defense can be dangerous.

On the clock: Carolina Panthers

For the next few weeks leading up to the draft, I am going to assume to roll of each NFL general manager and make 32 draft picks for the 2011 draft based upon need, scheme, and in some cases wants.  I will not make any trades throughout this process, but will chime in when I think one is needed.  Each day leading up to the draft I will make a pick and summarize my thought process of why certain teams will go a particular way.  So put this blog in your favorites section and check back daily to see who I will select for each team.  With the first pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panther select…

"Big D"
Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama (6’3” 319 lbs)

When you think about how bad a team must be to be the worst team in the NFL, it would be safe to assume that they probably got there with poor quarterback play.  The Carolina Panthers certainly fall into this category.  However, I do not think they are as bad as their 2-14 record would indicate. There were several keys injuries along the offensive line that hurt the pass protection and diminished the run blocking.  I am by no means a Jimmy Clausen fan. I didn’t like him in college and I thought the hype that surrounded him carried him to being drafted in the 2nd round on the 2010 draft. With that said, you cannot give up on a quarterback that had no protection, a poor running game and a lame duck head coach.  Drafting a QB #1 overall that is not a guarantee to have a winning record within the next 2 years would set this franchise back by at least 3 years.  Clausen came in as a 2nd round pick and needs more of a chance to prove he can be that guy. If you don’t give him that chance then you basically wasted a 2nd round pick.   Also, if the Panthers take Blaine Gabbert or Cam Newton and they flop, then you wasted a the 48th pick in the 2010 draft and the 1st overall pick in the 2011 draft.

As GM of the Panthers, I need to start getting players that are safe.  Patrick Peterson and Marcell Dareus are as safe as it gets.  I go with the defensive tackle, "Big D", in this case though because cornerbacks are usually not taken in the top 5 and I want to strengthen the middle of my defense.  Adding a high motor guy to get after the QB and stop the run will help improve the defense that lacks inside presence. Everette  Brown is developing and will improve if he doesn’t have to fight off double teams on the outside.   Jon Beason, Dan Connor and Thomas Davis will shine with better play up front from the DTs.  The pass rush could also give a chance to make Chris Gamble a better CB.

Now by no means will a defensive tackle win an extra 4 or 5 games for the Panthers. But it starts to develop an area of need and provide a base for this team to lean on. If the Panthers can get back to running the ball with Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams then they will have a chance to win close games late based off of a stronger defensive front and healthier offensive line by controlling the clock with the run game.   And as a GM that adds a DT with the first pick, if I put together a team that finishes dead last again, I can go and draft Andrew Luck next year, while at the same time developing a back-up quarterback and strengthening the defense which isn’t all that bad to begin with.  As a GM that picks a QB with the first pick, there will be a lot of pressure to fire me if we don’t win at least 4 games with that rookie QB. It is very difficult for a rookie QB to win without a good defense.  Another thing to consider is that with no OTAs in site and having very limited time to help my QB understand our system and develop, I’d be risking a lot to put this guy in day one.  I need someone to contribute from the get go and Marcell Dareus is that guy who can do that.

Some other things I am considering is to trade back in the draft. I have no second round pick and lots of holes.  This is a deep draft defensively and that’s what I need to improve at this point. If I can move back to say the 7th pick (San Francisco) and gather a few picks this year and next I am pulling the trigger. I can get either a pass rusher or CB at that spot. I am also considering the trade possibilities of Steve Smith. I’d like a 3rd round pick, but might have to settle for a 4th. I’ll do take that. Anything lower would not be advantageous for our team.

My Top 10 Keepers: RB

It's been a few days so I am guessing you are starving for some mo'. Today I have listed my top 10 keeper running backs for PPR leagues. Naturally most of you will argue (like you always do), but I am not budging.  If you don't have any of these RBs, try and figure out a way to get one of them. It ill make a world of difference for your team.

Name, Team (Age)

10) Darren McFadden. Oakland (23)

Run DMC was the 1st running back taken in 2008 and looked like a potential bust heading into the 2010 season. However, an amazing 2010 season has shot him up into the top 10.  He is a absolutely beast with the ball and is hard to tackle.  His injuries slowed him down early in his season and if he can remain healthy, he might be able to move into the top 5 before the season is over.

9) Matt Forte, Chicago (25)

Another running back from the 2008 draft class who will gobble up the passes is Matt Forte.  Mike Martz loves to utilize RBs out of the back and almost never has the RB's stay into block on pass plays.  He utilized the TE more to stay into block, hence the reason Greg Olsen is no longer a legitimate starter for our fantasy teams. Forte isn't going to break 60 yard touchdowns but has averaged 1,577 yards from scrimmage, 57 catches, and 8 TD's over the past 3 years and something even more important is that he hasn't missed a game.

8) Rashard Mendenhall, Pittsburgh (23)

A tough runner like Mendy is impossible to keep out of the top 10. The Steelers have had a balanced attack over the past few years which has allowed Mendy to break games wide open.  He doesn't get that many passes so that might be the reason he is outside of the top 5.  In non-PPR leagues is probably going to be at the top.  No one in their right mind would ever cut Mendnehall regardless of the league setup.

7) LeSean McCoy, Philadelphia (22)

It is WAY to early to compare LeSean McCoy to Brian Westbrook but let me just say this. LeSean has more rushing yards, receiving yards, receptions, and touchdowns than Westbrook did in his first 2 seasons. Just sayin'.  McCoy is in a special kind of offense that allows teams to forget about him because there is simply too much else to worry about.

6) Ray Rice, Baltimore (24)

The Rutgers alum has really become a focal point in the Ravens offense and now that McGahee might be on the way out we could be in line for some goalline work.  His production dropped of a little bit in 2010, but that might won't occur in 2011. Well that is if there is a 2011 season.

5) Jamaal Charles, Kansas City (24)

Considering this guy average 6.4 yards per carry last season, he should be higher on the list and expect him to explode in a feature role. Only a 3rd round pick in 2008, he has producing as a first round back.  I expect him to move into the top 3 this season with Thomas Jones leaving the Chiefs. I think Jamaal will be a hot commodity in the offseason.

4) Maurice Jones-Drew, Jacksonville (26)

MJD has been in the top 5 for the last few years and there is no reason to think he would not continue to be there for the next 2 years.  There is some concern over his surgery that he had in the offseason, but the trainers aren't worried about his recovery and strength.  His pass catching skills and ability to break big touchdowns make his a very scary threat to deal with.

3) Adrian Peterson. Minnesota (26)

All day APete is a rare running back that is able to be in the top 3 without being a real threat in the passing game.  The lack of production in this area keeps him off the field on 3rd downs but I can't imagine how dangerous he would be if he could catch more passes out of the backfield.  I mean he could be an all-time, all-timer if he could do that.

2) Chris Johnson, Tennessee (25)

CJ2K had a "down" year compared to 2009, but still outproduced all RBs. With a new offensive coordinator coming in and stating that he is going to run the ball 35 times a game must make CJ2K owners very happy.  A 1,500 yard season is very possible and 20 TD's could be a goal of his.

1) Arian Foster, Houston (24)

I know that I predicted this guy was going to be a sleeper before the season opened, but no one saw this coming.  What kind of freak like this goes UNDRAFTED and then produces the way he did. I don't know if we can expect much more from him next season, but I see no reason why anyone would worry about what he is going to do. He was untouchable all season.

My Top 10 Keepers: QB

For the more intense fantasy leagues that allow owners to select players they want to keep for the following season, here is my rankings of the top 10.  I'm sure some of you will disagree with me and I hope you do. If you feel I am missing someone, please let me know and why you think I am wrong.  And don't come at me with, "Oh, so and so should be #1 because he is nasty." I want more than that. I want evidence. Stats.

Also check out the local radio host sticking up for Philly at the bottom.  I came across it the other day by chance and I find it hilarious they way the national media portrays Philly.

Name, Team (Age)

10. Ben Roethlisberger, PIT (29)

If you put aside you hatred for the Steelers and the fact that Big Ben is a scum, he truly is a top 10 keeper.  In 2009 he threw for 4,300 yards and after his suspension in 2010 he averaged 266 passing yards per game. It is not outside the realm of possibility that Ben gets 4,300 yards and 30 TD's in 2011.  With Mike Wallace, Hines Ward, and Emmanuel Sanders on the outside, it will be easy for Ben to find open targets off of play action. Ben also rarely misses a game due to his ability to with stand a beating.

9. Matt Schaub, HOU (29)

West Chester native Matt Schaub fell off a little bit this season due to the emergence of Arian Foster.  He still still threw for 4370 yards and 24 TDs but that is down from 2009 when he threw for 4770 yards and 29 TDs.  If Gary Kubiak is smart he will keep feeding the ball to Arian Foster because he is a game changer, but I still expect Matt Schaub to be an elite QB for the next 3 years. Andre Johnson should be an elite target for at least that long.

8.Tony Romo, DAL (30)

With receivers like Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, and Jason Witten, it is hard to not be in the top 10.  Truth be told, Romo is not that great of a quarterback.  He is an average quarterback with elite receivers.  Need proof? Look at what the 38 year old Jon Kitna did with this team. His stats are awesome for a back up QB, but no one is hunting him down for a starting job. Tony turns 31 in about a month and doesn't have that many years left as an elite QB. He is only a solid keeper for another 2 years at most.

7. Matt Ryan, ATL (25)

Another Chester county native is in the top 10 and will be here for a long time.  He had is best year ever and is still improving. I fully expect Ryan to be an elite QB for the next 7-8 years.  Roddy White has made it easier on Ryan and if another WR is drafted in the first 3 rounds this year I expect Ryan to grow even more.  I love this guy and hate the fact he is in the NFC.

6. Drew Brees, NO (32)

Some of you are probably freaking out right now about me having Brees ranked so low but just read on.  I initially thought Brees was going to be ranked higher but I don't know who to move out of the top 5. Age is the biggest reason I moved him out of the top 5. His numbers are elite but I think it is always best to trade a player a year too early than a year too late.  He could be a possible trade high player this off season. If Sean Payton ever leaves, Brees's stock will drop.

5. Phillip Rivers, SD (29)

If anyone wants to make an argument about moving Brees into the top 5, I am sure they will argue Phillip Rivers doesn't belong.  But listen to my premise.  Rivers is younger and just as productive. I've I had to chose to KEEP Brees vs. Rivers for the next 5 years, I would pick Rivers.  He did ridiculous stuff with different no name receivers every week during the season and that is very impressive. Hate all you want.

4. Tom Brady, NE (33)

Now for all you PAT fans out there that think Brady should be the best fantasy football QB just relax. I am not saying Brady is the 4th best QB in the league.  I am saying he is the 4th best FANTASY QB keeper.  He was money this year but I just don't think he can replicate that again this season.  Also, when you dance like this you are not going to get higher than #3.

3. Peyton Manning, IND (34)

Peyton Manning is the oldest QB in the top 10 but he is probably the most consistent.  He has averaged 4,400 yards and 31 TDs over the past 3 seasons and has never missed a game in his career. If I could guarantee you that you QB would get you 20 points week in and week out for 7 straight years would you take it? The answer would be yes.  No other QB  in the league has done that. NONE.  Age limits Manning to the third ranked QB.

2.  Michael Vick, PHI (30)

Vick is essentially the ultimate weapon. In 2010 he averaged 251 yards passing per game, 56 yards rushing per game, and 2.5 TDs per game. Whoa.  He is a highlight reel and is capable of blowing up for 50 points in a game with his running ability. I love what he can do but his injury risk is what keeps him out of the top spot.  Vick is on the verge of an MVP season if he can stay healthy.

1. Aaron Rodgers, GB (27)

He is young, athletic, and accurate.   He has amazing receivers in Greg Jennings, Jermichael Finley, Jordy Nelson, and James Jones. He is in a great system and if I ask myself what quarterback I want on my team right now, I'd have to say Aaron Rodgers. He will be at the top for the next couple of years so if I were you, I'd go get this stud.

Updated Two Round Mock Draft: 3/2

This post is devoted to all you draft geeks out there who think they can somehow magically predict the draft like some sort magician.  First, let me say that no one out there will predict the first round correctly.  It is simply impossible and there are WAY too many reaches that teams go for that ruin mock drafts.  However, it is the time of the year to help you guys out with some ideas of who these players are and what the Eagles will do in the first and second.
Now please keep in mind that there will be several free agent to be QB's (Donovan McNabb, Kyle Orton, Vince Young) and some could be traded like Kevin Kolb.  There is a record amount of Free Agents to hit the block so who knows how that will work out with the CBA...

1st Round

1.  Carolina Panthers- DaQuan Bowers, DE (Clemson)
Top 3 Needs:  DE, QB, DT

I know many mocks have Nick Fairley going 1st overall but I just don't see it anymore.  Bowers is going to average 10 sacks a year and dominates against the run.  The Panthers desperately need a QB but Gabbert and Newton just simply aren't worth taking #1 overall.  AJ Green could be an option here but with Ron Rivera is a defensive guy. With no second round pick we might see the Panthers trade down a little bit. There are A LOT of holes on this team.

2.  Denver Broncos-  Nick Fairley, DT (Auburn)
Top 3 Needs: DE, DT, TE

I previously had Patrick Peterson at this pick but since Champ Bailey signed an extension to stay with the team I see them addressing the pressure up front. John Fox is moving to a 4-3 from a 3-4 and needs a dominant DT to have the type of defense he runs. Fairley didn't give 110% in college but I think John Fox is the type of coach that can motivate him.

3.   Buffalo Bills-   Patrick Peterson, CB (LSU)
Top 3 Needs:  OT, DE, CB

I'm one of the biggest supporters of Cam Newton but there is no way Buffalo takes Cam with Ryan Fitzpatrick still developing.  They need help at corner and Peterson is a can't miss player.  Defense is what the Bills need to improve, especially when they need to play Tom Brady twice a year. Peterson will be able to blitz, cover the TE's and has the speed to go deep with the speed WRs.

4.  Cincinnati Bengals- Blaine Gabbert, QB (Missouri)
Top 3 Needs: OL, WR, QB

With Carson Palmer making it clear that he wants out of Cincy, I think it is safe to say that QB is a top priority.  Gabbert is leaving college early as the best all around QB in the draft and might be the new start of a new era. If Palmer comes out and says that he wants to stay then I'll change this pick, but I see no way that then pass on a QB with Gabbert's potential. Gabbert is worth a late first round pick in dynasty formats.  Expect him to go around the 9th or 10th pick in the rookie only drafts.

5.  Arizona Cardinals-  Von Miller, 3-4 OLB (Texas A&M)
Top 3 Needs: QB, 3-4 OLB, OG

Larry Fitzgerald was asked by the Arizona Cardinals which QB he wants to throw him passes and his answer was Kevin Kolb.  He had a list of 5 QB's and none of them were rookies in the draft so if the Cardinals are smart they will listen to their star WR or he will walk after the 2011 season.  This forces them to improve their next biggest issue which is the pass rush. Miller can get after the QB and he is smart. He has the potential to be an icon in this league.

6.  Cleveland Browns- A.J. Green, WR (Georgia)
Top 3 Needs: WR, 3-4 DE, OT

If AJ Green falls to the Browns here, they might quite literally spirnt to the podium.  Green is a game breaker and is the exact type of WR that Colt McCoy needs to improve.  I can't imagine a scenario where the Browns pass on A.J. Green.  Most rookie fantasy drafts will see A.J. Green draft 1st or 2nd overall.  He could fall to second if he ends up in a bad situation (i.e. Carolina).  I see him going 1st overall in my dynasty league.
7.  San Francisco 49ers-  Marcell Dareus, DT (Alabama)
Top 3 Needs: CB, NT, 3-4 OLB

Many people think Marcell out shined Fairley at the combine and that it all well and good. However, the potential for Fairley is just a bit higher.  Both players will be productive from day one.  I almost considered Prince Amukamara at this pick, but the CB class is deeper than the DT class.

8.  Tennesee Titans- Robert Quinn, DE (UNC)

Top 3 Needs: QB, CB, DE

Robert Quinn did not play this season due to a suspension from the NCAA but if he did, he could have possibly been the #1 overall pick but that is extremely unlikely due to the suspension.  He is strong and fast off the line.  He is used to playing with his hand on the ground but this guy has a great chance to be similar to Terrell Suggs if he goes to a 3-4 defense like Arizona or San Fran. I fully expect Tennessee to trade up and go after Blaine Gabbert.

9.  Dallas Cowboys-  Nate Solder, LT (Colorado)

Top 3 Needs:  OT, CB, 3-4 DE

Solder was able to add weight before the combine and looks as if he will be able to put on another 10 lbs before OTAs (if there are any). Amukamara looks very enticing at this pick but part of the reason the Cowboys finished so poorly last season was because they could not protect Tony Romo.  That needs to be fixed.
10.  Washington Redskins-  Prince Amukamara, CB (Nebraska)
Top 3 Needs: QB, WR, CB

If I am re-building a franchise the same way the Shanahan girls are trying to rebuild, then I start with the defense.  Julio Jones will be very enticing for the Redskins at this point, but strengthening their defense with a potential lock down corner is a absolute need and here is why.  Jeremy Maclin, DeSean Jackson, Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham, Dez Bryant, and Miles Austin are all in the division and need to be accounted for. DeAngelo Hall is not a lock down corner no matter how you try and slice it.

11.  Houston Texans- Jimmy Smith, CB (Colorado)

Top 3 Needs: DT, CB, SS

At 6'2", 203 lbs, Smith will be able to be matched up with the bigger receivers (Kenny Britt) in the division as well as stick with the possession receivers (Reggie Wayne).  He has had some off the field issues while at college but I'd consider them very minor compared to the other problems that some players are reported to have in their files.

12. Minnesota Vikings- Cam Newton, QB (Auburn)
Top 3 Needs- QB, DE, S

Newton's physical measurements cannot be questioned.  He's a freak of an athlete and can throw the ball a mile.  He has a great running back to hand the ball off to over the course of the next 3 years but will need time and coaching to develop.  His accuracy issues were over blown at the combine and a team desperate enough for a QB will allow the "icon and entertainer" comments to slide.  He has "it" and if you need proof take a look at the comeback wins this season and take a look at the two consecutive championships he has won at two different football levels. He shouldn't get drafted in the first round of any dynasty leagues but it takes one team to fall in love with him. He has early second round written all over him.

13.  Detroit Lions-  Tyron Smith, OT (USC)
Top 3 Needs:  OL, CB, S

Matt Stafford needs protection and investing an offensive lineman with Tyron's ability would help Stafford development and confidence immensely.  "Experts" like Mike Golic say that there are flags on Smith because he didn't play blindside in college so he must have flaws.  Well, that is just arrogant because if he would have taken his time to do the proper research he would see that a potential top 5 pick in Matt Kalil (brother of Ryan Kalil) is at the other tackle position. Pete Carroll even said that when he was coach, he trusted Tyron to switch to the other side if something happened to Matt, but that it never came to that.

14. St. Louis Rams-  Julio Jones, WR (Alabama)

Top 3 Needs:  WR, OLB, DT

Julio blew scouts away at the combine and even bested in A.J. Green in most categories so I wouldn't be shocked if he goes a few spots earlier to a team that takes the best player available versus taking a player to fill a need. Jones ran a 4.39 40 yard dash with a broken bone is his foot! Surgery will be needed to fix it but he will be fully recovered before the mini camps start up(if there are any) He will probably be a top 3 pick in most rookie only fantasy drafts. I see him going 3rd overall in my dynasty league.
15.  Miami Dolphins- Mark Ingram, RB (Alabama)

Top 3 Needs:  QB, RB, S

Unless Ronnie Brown comes back at a serious discount, he will no longer be with the team.  I'm not sure who the QB will be for the Dolphins next season, but whoever it is will need to lean on a good run game and Ingram will provide it.  He's the type of horse who can carry the ball 25 times per game. No way that Ingram falls past the 3rd overall pick in an rookie fantasy drafts. I see him going second overall in my dynasty league.

16.  Jacksonville Jaguars- Adrian Clayborn, DE (Iowa)

Top 3 Needs:  DE, ILB, FS

Clayborn has the ideal size to line up at right defensive end to go up against the tight end and tackle to help against the run or to line up on the left side and go after the Quarterback.  That flexibility will make Clayborn appealing to a lot of teams, especially teams that were poor against the run and pass like the Jags were.

17- New England Patriots- Gabe Carimi, OT (Wisconsin)
Top 3 Needs:  3-4 OLB, OG, OT

The Patriots have an aging offensive line and an unhappy one at that.  Carimi has the skill set of a right tackle or right guard to start immediately.  He could be an eventual blindside tackle with proper training.  Experience will also play a key factor.  Carimi did not blow anyone away at the combine, but he also didn't do anything to hurt his draft stock.

 18.  San Diego Chargers- J.J. Watt, 3-4 DE (Wisconsin)
Top 3 Needs: 3-4 DE, 3-4 OLB, ILB

It will be difficult for the Chargers to have a top ranked defense again with the departure of Ron Rivera.  Last year, it was Rivera's scheme that help the defense.  This year they need to get more skill.  J.J. Watt might be the best 3-4 DE in the draft and that is exactly what San Diego needs.  The front 7 has to get better to compete in the AFC West.

19.  New York Giants- Anthony Castanzo, OT (Boston College)
Top 3 Needs:  DT, RB, OL

The O-line for the Giants needs some youth.  While the Giants had a dominant O-Line in the past, the same can't be said for this past year.  Castanzo will be able to help out at any position along the line other than at Center.
20.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Justin Houston, DE (Georgia)
Top 3 Needs:  OLB, DE, S

Gotta love those bulldogs.  Tampa's defense improved dramatically last year with the insertion of top rookie defensive tackles in the first and second round.  Despite the last season injuries along the line, the team is ready to take the next step.  All they need is a pass rushing DE like Houston to help out along the line.
21. Kansas City Chiefs- Cameron Jordan, DE (Cal)

Top 3 Needs: OLB, DE, FS

The Chiefs were one of the most surpsing teams last year. Bowe, Charles, Cassell, McCluster, Hali, and Berry lead the team to the AFC West crown with ease.  Now if they can sure up the run defense they may be able to win the division for the next few years.  If Jordan slips to #21, and some players slip for no reason at all (Jeremy Maclin), then the Chiefs will get a steal and get a domiant 3-4 DE.
22. Indianaplois Colts-  Derek Sherrod, OT (Miss. St)
Top 3 Needs: OL, DT, S

To say that the Colts offensive line was horrible this year would be an understatement.  They couldn't run block or pass block. The Colts GM Bill Polian even admitted that they made a mistake last year at the combine by not taking tackle Roger Saffold. As Charlie Sheen would say, "Uhhhh, duuuhhh".

23.  Philadelphia Eagles- Mike Pouncey, G (Florida)
Top 3 Needs: OL, DL, CB

As much as I think Winston Justice is a turnstyle, I think the RG position is the more pressing issue.  King Dunlap or Winston Justice can be suitable for another year possibly at RT.  There are NO answers at RG right now as I see it on the Eagles roster.  Pouncey may even be able to shift to C and move McGlynn back to guard where he is better suited. Jamaal Jackson has had injury problems so wee need some insurance. There is a 10% chance the Eagles hold on to the 23rd pick.

24.  New Orleans Saints- Ryan Kerrigan, DE (Purdue)

Top 3 Needs: DL, OLB, S

The Saints defense can always use upgrades in the front 7 and I see Kerrigan helping out the most with the run defense.  He has a high motor so I can see him getting about 8-10 sacks a year.  I personally don't like one year wonders like Kerrgian, but someone will fall in love with him.
25. Seattle Seahwaks-  Ryan Mallet
Top 3 Needs: RT, OG, QB

Charlie Whitehurst is not the answer and Pete Carroll knows it.  Not sure if any QB's that are left are the answer.  Mallet has some "reported" problems and they may or may not be over blown.  However, his inaccuracy was horrible and not worthy of a first round pick.  He needs to improve his accuracy and Carroll has to take a chance on someone at QB.  I truly believe though that Seattle will trade for Kevin Kolb and sure up the QB position.
26. Baltimore Ravens- Randall Cobb, WR (Kentucky)

Top 3 Needs:  CB, S, WR

With a WR corp that has players all over the age of 30 the need a top flight WR to takeover for the futre.  Cobb is quick underneath and a great route runner.  He has taken snaps under center in a type of Wildcat offense and can do about anything you ask him to.  Flacco to Cobb could be a dream scenario in Baltimore after Mason and Housh retire.

27.  Atlanta Falcons- Akeem Ayers, OLB (UCLA)
Top 3 Needs:  OLB, DE, TE

Lofton, Ayers and Weatherspoon could form one of the most dominant LB trio's in the league.  The front 4 needs some upgrading but there isn't a DE as good as Ayers at this spot.  Ayers has the ability to rush the QB as well so you could see him get some sacks as well.

28. New England Patriots-  Mikel LeShoure,  RB (Illinois)
Top 3 Needs:  3-4 OLB, DE, OG
LeShoure is certainly not a need of the Pats and I truly don't even see them holding onto this pick but if they do, LeShoure makes alot of sense.  All of their RB's are old sans the Law Firm Benjarvis Green-Ellis.  Leshoure has versatility and has shown the ability to pass block, something that is key for the New England offense. I'd expect LeShoure to be drafted around the 5th or 6th spot of dynasty league drafts.

29. Chicago Bears- Corey Liuget, DT (Illinois)
Top 3 Needs: OT, WR, S

With the release of Tommie Harris there becomes an immediate need for a DT.  Harris was an athletic DT who could provide a strong pass rush up the middle.  The Bears could expect the same from Liugent. He did poorly in the bench press with only 18 reps, but still has quick hands and feet to defeat the guards in one on one situations.
30. New York Jets- Phil Taylor, NT (Baylor)

Top 3 Needs: DE, 3-4 OLB, S

With Kris Jenkins released, there is an immediate need for a NT to improve the run defense. Taylor is a mammoth at 6'4", 345  lbs.  I don't see how the Jets could pass on this guy with their glaring need along the front line.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers- Muhammed Wilkerson, 3-4 DE (Temple)

Team Needs: OL, S, DL

I'd like to see a OL fall to the Steeler's at this pick but I don't see any that are worth a first round pick at this point.  The end of the second round will have plenty of guards for them to choose from. Wilkerson will provide depth and make for one of the scariest 3-4 defenses in the league.

32.  Green Bay Packers- Cameron Heyward, DE (Ohio St.)

Team Needs: OL, DL, ILB
Improving an already dominant front 7 needs to be at the topof Green Bay's list.  It is what got them through when everything was spiraling down and we all know that injuries along the DLine are a constanteen Bay's list.  It is what got them through when everything was spiraling down and we all know that injuries along the DLine are a constant.  Providing great depth will help eliminate that problem.

2nd Round

33. New England- Aldon Smith, 3-4 OLB, Missouri

34. Buffalo- Stephen Paea, DT, Oregon State

35. Cincinnati- Ryan Wlliams, RB, Virginia Tech

36. Denver- Rahim Moore, S, UCLA

37. Cleveland- Christian Ballard, DE, Iowa

38. Arizona- Cameron Jordan, TE, USC

39. Tennessee- Jake Locker, QB, Washington

40. Dallas- Ras-I Dowling, CB, Virginia

41.  Washington- Leonard Hankerson, WR, Miami

42. Houston- Dontay Moch, 3-4 OLB, Nevada

43. Minnesota- Sam Acho, DE, Texas

44. Detroit- Brandon Harris, CB, Miami

45. San Francisco- Christian Ponder, QB, Florida St.

46. Denver- Martez Wilson, LB, Illinois

47. St. Louis- DeAndre McDaniel, S, Clemson

48. Oakland- Rodney Hudson, OG, Florida St.

49. Jacksonville- Torrey Smith, WR, Maryland

50. San Diego- Aaron Williams, CB, Texas

51. Tampa Bay- Titus Young, WR, Boise St

52. NY Giants- Marvin Austin, DT, UNC

53. Indianapolis- Marcus Cannon, OG, TCU

54. Philadelphia- Drake Nevis. DT, LSU

55. Kansas City- Jonathan Baldwin, WR, Pitt

56. New Orleans- Jacquizz Rodgers, RB, Oregon State

57. Seattle Seahawks- Danny Watkins, OL, Baylor

58.  Baltimore Ravens- Stephen Wisniewski, C, Penn State

59. Atlanta Falcons- Clint Boling, OG, Georgia

60. New England- Vincent Brown, WR, San Diego State

61. New York Jets- Orlando Franklin, OG, Miami

62.  Chicago Bears- Greg Jones, LB, Michigan State

63. Pittsburgh Steelers- James Carpenter, OL, Alabama

64 Green Bay Packers- John Moffit, OL, Wisconsin
